One way of contributing to this would be to write a letter to his successor in which he gives advice on how to deal with the Ibo people succesfully. This precisely is my frist written task. To make it seem as if it were reverend Brown who has written the letter I had to use a certain style of writing which differs from my personal language style. This has two reasons. First of all, the novel i things fall aparti is set in the end of the nineteenth centrury. Even though many words we use today already excisted in that period, the vocabulary most commonly used was different. In order to reproduce this, I have tried to use more i old-fashioned synonyms of words. A strong example of this is the word well-nigh in the first paragraph which is an old-time way of saying nearly. Also, written sentences often had a rather complex structure in those days. I have tried to write similar sentences, but I havent always fully succeeded. A complicating factor might have been that the novel itself isnt written in the nineteenth century style of writing which meant that I couldnt take this literary option as an example. The second reason why the style of writing is different is because reverend Brown is a very religious man. In his life, he mainly would have read religious texts which often are full of metaphors. This would have influenced his own style of writing. Therefore I used quite a number of religious metaphors in the letter such as calling the leader of the church a herder and the convents his flock. In content too, the letter had to reflect reverend Browns ideas.. In order to achieve this I have read chapter 21 carefully extracting Browns beliefs on what the people of Umofia are like and how to best deal with them. For example in the second paragraph I have written that the religion of the Ibo people is one of fear. This is derived from what Akkuna says halfway though the chapter we are afraid to worry their master. This processing of ideas derived from the text not only makes the letter more credible, it also demonstrates an understanding of the novel. Women, Sport and Film The history of women’s sports is a rocky one with some many obstacles against the establishment of a competitive league for women. It is somewhat unusual to think of a time period where women were not allowed to play sports or have any say in which sports they were to play. However, one must only look back about a century to find a period in history where men believed that women were physically and socially unable to play sports. Men believed that a woman would damage her reproductive organs by playing any type of sport and would damage her image of being a lady if she was found to be physically exerting herself. Thankfully, these thoughts did not persist and the establishment of all women athletic associations was seen. Yet, once again men tried to intervene and eventually were able to cause a merger of the two genders under one heading, primarily the NCAA. This merger eliminated many of the leadership roles women had previously held and therefore causing women to play under the shadow of men. The beginning of women in competitive sports can be traced back to the 1890’s and the introduction of basketball to women at Smith College. However this initial involvement was linked to medical reasoning more than anything else. Women physical educator’s mission was to â€Å"balance the rigors of intellectual life with healthful and ‘appropriate’ sporting activities.† In order to maintain the appropriateness of sports, there were only female physical educators and only specific sports where practiced. These sports included swimming, tennis, golf, dance, and basketball. During the 1890’s the Committee of Women’s Athletics was begun and was responsible for setting regulations that educators needed to follow when in came to sports and women. This was the first example of women in a leadership role within the sports sphere. The CWA believed that women should not be included within the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) due to the practices they had witnessed by the AAU in terms of men’s sports. The CWA was able to claim â€Å"legitimate jurisdiction over all females in educational sports and tried to control athletics in the public sector as well.† This control was something that women tried to hold on to during the beginning of the following century, however this grasp would be harder and harder to maintain. The doctors and nurses don’t think that Chief Bromden can hear what they are saying, so therefor they don’t hesitate to say anything in front of him. â€Å"They don’t bother not talking out loud about their hate secrets when I’m nearby because they think I’m deaf and dumb†(10). This is very beneficial because Chief Bromden knows what takes place in the ward, and knows what it takes to survive. Many feared for their loved ones now joining the Second World War, many feared for the economy, their lives and safety at the home front. The biggest concern with safety at the home front was another attack from Japan. Since we were now a war with Japan many believed that the Japanese living in the U.S were a potential danger. From there they would be shipped to relocation camps in California and Arkansas.
